How to Apply

How to Apply

Applying for ABE-sponsored insurance is quick and easy. Apply online when you're ready. Just follow these steps:

1) Calculate.

Use our Coverage Calculator to help you determine the types and amounts of ABE-sponsored insurance coverage for which you may be eligible to apply. Use our Rate Calculators to determine the rate available for your age and preferred benefit amount.

2) Decide.

See our Plan Description pages to learn more about our ABE-sponsored plans, including benefits tailored for lawyers, such as portability*, and our unique charitable giving feature. Still have questions? Call your personal ABE Insurance Plan Specialist.

3) Apply.

ABA members can apply for coverage for themselves and their families. You can apply for ABE-sponsored plans online, or call us to get a paper application.

Thank you for trusting us to help protect you and your family. This guide outlines what you can expect to happen during the underwriting of your application and how you can ensure the process stays on schedule.

What Happens After I Apply?

What happens next depends on which plan(s) you apply for:

  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment or Hospital Money Plan insurance.
    • These two plans are guaranteed acceptance. You will not have to go through underwriting, and your application will be reviewed within 24 business hours. You will be notified by ABE of your premium due and when your coverage will become effective.
  • All other plans.
    • All applications for other ABE-sponsored plans will be forwarded to New York Life Insurance Company for underwriting.
    • Depending on the amount of coverage you applied for, a paramedical exam (including detailed medical history along with a blood and urine sample) may be required. A paramedical service will contact you to arrange an appointment at your convenience. There is no cost to you for this exam and it can be done in the privacy of your home or office.
    • Complete underwriting usually takes 6-8 weeks. If you have any questions during your underwriting process, feel free to contact your personal ABE Insurance Plan Specialist who can guide you through the application process.

After you receive approval of your application, we will notify you of the premium due and the coverage effective date. You will then enter your 30-day Free Look period. If you decide not to participate, simply return the Certificate without a claim within 30 days, and coverage will be invalidated without cost or obligation.

*Portability is subject to U.S. Government regulations and each plan contains specific termination provisions.

All ABE-sponsored plans are group insurance plans, meaning coverage is issued to an ABA member under a Certificate of Insurance. It is not provided under an individual policy, nor is it employer/employee insurance. Plans may vary and may not be available in all states.
