The Commission was founded in order to increase access to justice for victims of stalking, sexual assault, and domestic violence. The Commission aims to do so by attempting to increase the number of well- trained attorneys who are able to provide representation to these victims. Its goal is not to provide lawyer referrals or give legal advice to domestic violence survivors directly, but rather to provide creative in-person, web-based, and telephonic training opportunities for lawyers, law students, and other legal advocates to help them better represent these victims when the occasion arises. Research has confirmed that access to legal representation is one of the most important resources helping victims to escape violent situations and The ABA Commission on Domestic Violence is the only national organization that focuses exclusively on improving the legal response to these victims.
